Key Stage 3

Design Technology is taught in all year groups up to Key Stage 3 and ‘Resistant Materials’ is offered as an option for GCSE. The workshop is equipped with a number of machines including band and scroll saws, pillar drills, sanding machines and a wood turning lathe.  The pupils use a range of materials from timber and acrylic, through to pewter and glass. The pupils are given a practical understanding of these materials through the production of high quality, original and creative solutions to the projects set by the Department. They are taught a variety of skills including the correct and safe use of tools and machinery ensuring that they have a comprehensive understanding of Health and Safety issues.

Key Stage 4

We follow the OCR Product Design – J305 GCSE syllabus.  This consists of two coursework projects, each worth 30% of the final mark (60% in total) and two examined units – a practical exam and a written paper each worth 20% of the final mark (40% in total)
